The mood among the spiriting community on smackjeeves is in general rather low. People are rather happy staying in their little groups of people and the only time you ever see everyone in one place is during a flame war. In an attempt to try and restore some faith among the community and to try to shatter some of the common stereotypes associated with sprite comics, I have decided to start a bi-weekly sprite competition. These sprite competitions are meant to encourage working in teams and try to be creative.

For this I will need everyone’s help.
Currently I have a first draft of the rules posted here.
As you can see it is very unorganised right now and unpolished. I have planned to fix this by the end of the month. Before I do so I need your feedback.

Firstly would you be interested in participating?
If so would you be interested in participating as part of a team?
Do 2 weeks seem like a reasonable deadline?
Should there be guidelines as to what makes a comic a “Sprite Comic” or should I assume users are capable of knowing when they’ve overstepped the mark?
Judges or public voting, or perhaps alternating between them?
Any potential names for the competition?
Maskot perhaps?
Please voice any other concerns you might have.

I apologise for how rough the concept might appear right now but I can reassure you this is an idea I’ve had for months maybe years now and is one I’ve applied a lot of though to. Over the coming month I jope to refine it.

I do say the concept is an Ambitious, yet interesting one.

I would be interested in entering, not every week, but certain weeks If I like the theme.

Teams could work, but it could be problematic knowing who's in which team.

2 weeks should be long enough.

Since there's a quality control in a draft, I doubt guidelines are required.

Judges are probably a better idea than public voting. Although both have problems.

A Mascot could be like a Prinny Painter or something.

And name, hmm, The Bi-Weekly Spriters Challenge... BWSC... BoWling for Soup Cans?

Firstly would you be interested in participating?~Yes
If so would you be interested in participating as part of a team?~Yes
Do 2 weeks seem like a reasonable deadline?~Yes
Should there be guidelines as to what makes a comic a “Sprite Comic” or should I assume users are capable of knowing when they've overstepped the mark?~A sprite comic is a comic made of game graphics in a bitmap form. I believe this is a standard. On the other hand, a pixel comic is one made of original elements that are in bitmap form.
Judges or public voting, or perhaps alternating between them?~Visit 99polls.com and just make a poll for every contest. Then allow the people to vote.
Any potential names for the competition?~...I got nothing...

So, ya this is what I think. :3

And one more thing...NO MASCOTS!!!

Five: Yes to judges

  Terminal Devastation says:

ooo...
1) I'm interested
2) I've no clue.
3) They'll know. FlyingMonkey's definition is dang close to the true standard. The older spriting community(s) also include some pixeled comics with original elements as well, namely those styled to look like they would be from a sprited game.
4) A hybrid of both. The judges scores + vote scores = final score.
5)The sprite comic off?
6)If a mascot is to be, it will happen on its own.

  Gamermaster says:

I might be interested in competing.
As for teams, the only person I ever work with is my younger brother, it just doesn't work for me otherwise.
2 weeks is perfectly reasonable.
Guidelines should be unique depending on the competition at hand.
Judges would be better because with public voting, people can just make multiple accounts to increase votes. But the Judges should not remain the same.
As a name, I think Pixel Perfect.
I think the mascot should be represented as a single pixel, representing the building blocks that all sprites and (by extension) spriters share. That or a cartoon paint bucket. Heck you could make it where the first contest is to design the mascot.

But my question is what type of contests would they be? Would they be along the lines of spriting something in a particular style, a particular subject matter or something else altogether?

If so would you be interested in participating as part of a team? Either way is fine with me.
Do 2 weeks seem like a reasonable deadline? Definitely
Should there be guidelines as to what makes a comic a “Sprite Comic” or should I assume users are capable of knowing when they've overstepped the mark? I think that a sprite comic is a sprite comic. If it uses custom sprites, it's still a sprite comic. If, on the other hand, it is completely custom, backgrounds and all, it then becomes pixel art.
Judges or public voting, or perhaps alternating between them? I think alternating between them every few weeks would be good.
Any potential names for the competition? Big-'ol Wonderful Spriting Competitiopn?

  Geoff says:

I'm completely in. I have one question about the definition of "sprite comic" though. Were it to be like Simple Pixel, where the characters are sprites, but the backgrounds are real, would it be considered not a sprite comic? I'll probably end up not using real backgrounds, but I figured I should ask to be safe. And as long as I'm on that topic, what about such comics as Twinkle Popopo Z, where the sprites aren't used half as much as the fancy and flashy effects? I'm a HUGE fan of effects.

As for teams, I work better alone. If teams were to happen, it'd work for me, but I'd prefer no teams.

Two weeks is EASY. School may become a hassle eventually, but two weeks sounds plenty at the moment.

I agree with Celestial_Wolf, that if the comics would be turned down if bad quality, then guidelines are unneeded.

I'm going with the judges idea. I suppose voting could work, what with the rating system SJ has, but it'd get messy. Of course, you don't NEED to use the rating system, I'm just saying, voting will be time consuming on everyone's parts.

I'm feeling a good mascot would be good ol' Pacman. and I mean either the 8-Bit Pacman, or a sleek illustration of Pacman. There's no in between. Wakka wakka.

BWSC sounds like a fine title to me.

  Captain Ghost says:

Firstly would you be interested in participating? -- Occasionally, yes.
If so would you be interested in participating as part of a team? -- Probably not, but it depends on what 'working as part of a team' entails, exactly.
Do 2 weeks seem like a reasonable deadline? -- Yeah, sure.
Should there be guidelines as to what makes a comic a “Sprite Comic” or should I assume users are capable of knowing when they’ve overstepped the mark? -- -shrug- Guidelines if there in some discord in opinion, I suppose. Otherwise... well. Doesn't matter to me.
Judges or public voting, or perhaps alternating between them? -- Judges (preferably), or alternating.
Any potential names for the competition? -- BWSC sounds fine.
Mascot perhaps? -- ... No clue. @@~

Sounds interesting though.

  SamsterBoy says:

Firstly would you be interested in participating? -- If I have the time, certainly.
If so would you be interested in participating as part of a team? -- I honestly wouldn't mind, I'd give it a shot.
Do 2 weeks seem like a reasonable deadline? -- Yep.
Should there be guidelines as to what makes a comic a “Sprite Comic” or should I assume users are capable of knowing when they’ve overstepped the mark? -- Maybe an elaborate guideline would be necessary.
Judges or public voting, or perhaps alternating between them? -- I'd personally vote on both the judges and the for the public. How this would work is by having two awards based on the judges opinion and the readers.
Any potential names for the competition? -- I'll leave that up to you.
Maskot perhaps? -- How bout Mario and/or Luigi in a suit? Seeing as you brought up the idea why not?

  Shade Guy says:

1 - Maybe. Not every time.
2 - It would be interesting to see what a team comic would be like...Maybe alternating between single and groups?
3 - Sure, why not?
4 - I'm pretty sure it would be assumed.
5 - Judges. Perhaps the top 3 or so comics could be the next weeks judges?
6 - ...No idea.
7 - I liked the single pixel idea Gamermaster suggested.

-Sure, I'd love to be a part of a team

-Sure, 2 weeks is pretty easy to get in on.

-Nah, I'm sure anyone entering knows what a Sprite Comic is.

-Try judging first, and if that doesn't go well, public voting.

-Can't think of any names at the moment at the moment.

Please voice any other concerns you might have.

-We're affiliated, but we both have broken links. We should probably fix those.

  Gamermaster says:

I have an idea for the types of contests that there could be:
1. You are given a character and asked to sprite it. (e.g. Sprite a rabbid)
2. You are given a style and asked to sprite something in that style, that could vary from making an object to a background. (e.g. make something in MLSS style)
3. You are given a character and asked to come up with a personality that they could have in a webcomic of a particular genre. (e.g. Shantae the half-genie in a drama.)
4. You are asked to make a page of a sprite comic where a particular event happens (possibly within a certain number of frames). (e.g. Donkey Kong and Sonic have a dance off in 6 frames)
5. You are given an pre-made by the judges page of a sprite comic and asked to put dialog to it.
